Sailing in Greece offers fantastic scenery, magical anchorages and a very delicious cuisine. Charters visiting Greece have many stunning locations to explore; the three main areas being the Ionian, Cyclades and Saronic Islands. Each set of islands has its own distinct character and appeal. What makes Greece so appealing is that visitors can come back year on year and still discover new places off the beaten track.
The Ionian Islands are rich in history and nature. They are one of the most beautiful areas for sailing in the world. This archipelago includes the well-known islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia to the south and Corfu to the north, as well as a number of smaller beautiful islands in between. Kefalonia is one of the the most popular islands thanks to the best selling novel, and subsequent film, ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’.
The Cyclades‘ 39 islands are perfect for island-hopping. Each island has its own character. There are popular islands such as Mykonos, Santorini and Ios, all beautiful and vibrant. Then there are Naxos, Paros, Milos, Sifnos, Polyegos, ideal for out-of-the-main-season periods, perfect for foodies, art lovers, and admirers of beautiful landscapes.
Explore the Saronic islands. Set sail towards destinations such as idyllic Poros, cosmopolitan Spetses, traditional Nafplio, picturesque Porto Heli and romantic Hydra before continuing onto Aegina and Agistri. End your charter in historic Epidavros. All of these islands are worth visiting as they have a variety of ports, unique histories, and a cosmopolitan lifestyle for any taste.
The Dodecanese are in the south-eastern Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean, just off the coast of Turkey. They are often called the sunniest corner of Greece. All are well worth a visit, but perhaps, the most popular islands in this area are Kos, Rhodes, Symi and a very small island of Kastellorizo, also known as the prettiest of all the Dodecanese islands. Kastellorizo is in the easternmost side of Greece.
Yacht charter season in Greece starts early May and ends late October. During the months of July and August, the Cyclades are exposed to the often very strong Meltemi wind at which times sailing in those areas might not be possible.
